Laurence Sterne, novelist and clergyman, born today in 1713 - I presume he became a clergyman because he was the third son, but I need to check this: the first lives the life of Riley (who was Riley anyway?), because he will inherit; the second goes into the army, because he has to prove he would have made just as a good a Lord as his elder brother; the third joins the church because what else is there to do that bestows status and guarantees an income? Isn't that how it was? The fourth, if there was one, married one of Tselaphchad's daughters (click here and then here).

I always try to match my font with the key colour in the illustration, but this one clearly isn't going to be legible. Go for second colour

And today in 1963, a most bizarre incident, inexplicable even by conspiracy theory: the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby, two days after Oswald may or may not have assassinated JFK.
Why was Ruby, a night-club owner, even there? How did he bring a gun in? The guy was about to be electric chaired anyway! Was it then a suicide-dive into the history books - his own death the inevitable consequence, given that he did it in front of dozens of witnesses, and TV cameras not two yards away (you can watch the whole thing, by clicking here), and inside a jailhouse, so no possibility of getting away? Or suicide because he knew he was dying of cancer, and if I have to go young, then I'm gonna take that son-of-a-bitch who killed Kennedy with me? Ironically he too evaded the electric chair; he died, from a pulmonary embolism connected to that lung cancer, on January 3rd 1967 (conspiracy theorists will tell you that he was deliberately injected with a cancer vaccine in order to prevent him adding new testimony at his re-trial; they will also tell you the Mafia were so furious that their boy in the White House had been killed, they were determined to do the revenging themselves, and sent Ruby).
